How To Make Homemade Irish Soda Bread

Quick and easy homemade Irish soda bread recipe with whole-wheat flour, baking soda, salt, buttermilk. The best Irish soda bread around!

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • 1½ tsp baking soda
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • ½ tsp black sesame seeds

DIRECTIONS

Pre heat the oven to 400 ˚F (200 ˚ C).

 

Sift the flour, baking soda, and salt in to a large bowl. Mix with your hand, combine the dry ingredients.

 

Pour the buttermilk in to the bowl. With your hand quickly draw the flour in to the buttermilk to make a soft dough. It should be slightly sticky. Do not overwork the dough or the bread will be heavy.

 

Turn the dough on to a lightly floured wok surface. Divided dough in two parts. Shape those in to a round lough. Put the loughs on the floured baking sheet.

 

With a very sharp knife, make an X 1 cm deep, in the top of the loughs. A dd black sesame seeds on top.

How To Make Homemade Irish Soda Bread

Bake the loughs in the heated oven for 30-40 minutes, until brown. Turn the loughs over and tap the bottom with your knuckles. The bread should sound hollow. Transfer the bread to a wire rack and let cool slightly.
